African Sex Kitten/American Sex Queen is the debut studio album by Blackmask. An experimental double album, it is divided into two sides, with different musical styles.

Background and composition[]

Blackmask was given a guitar by her biological father East Bay Jay, in a rare visit.

Years after Jay's death, she and her little brother Lil Spot would pay tribute by writing songs. Their older siblings, Stripes and Patches, would help them get familiar with the music business. Sadly, she would stop writing music after Spot's death.

However, she met the Twins, and, with the help of Carmine, they formed a band called PurpleSkies. This inspired her to get back to making her own songs. This time, she decided to make a double album.

Musically, it overall is an alternative hip hop project. Separately, African Sex Kitten is influenced by the hyphy movement, with elements of trap music and RnBass. American Sex Queen, meanwhile, is more emo- and punk-influenced, as a tribute to Jay and Spot. Blackmask both sings and raps in both sides of the album.

Lyrically, each album has songs about the party life, sex, heartbreak, and the loss of a loved one.
